Why iTunes won't add MP4 video?

It is well known that MP4 is a multimedia container format, it can be encoded with various different video codec. However, iTunes only supports to play MPEG-4 movies that end with the file extension of .mov, .mp4 and .m4v. If the MP4 files that you try to import to iTunes are encoded with other incompatible video codec such as H.265/HEVC, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV/VC-1, VP8, VP9, MVC, Theora, etc, iTunes will fail to open them.

To fix this codec incompatible issue, you can use a video conversion program such as Pavtube Video Converter (best video converter review) to transcode unsupported MP4 to iTunes playable MPEG-4 format. Sometimes, even if you have got iTunes playable MP4 format with the right video or audio codec, you may still fail to sync the MP4 video from iTunes to iPhone, iPad or Apple TV if the MP4 video does not meet the technical specification standards such as video/audio codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, resolution, etc for those iOS devices. No need to worry, you can easily fix it by tweak those settings in the program's profile settings window to make them adapt with your iOS devices.

Besides converting MP4 to iTunes, the program can also do you a great favor to convert other unsupported file formats such as AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MKV, H.265, etc for adding into iTunes library.

For Mac users, you can download Pavtube Video Converter for Mac to perform the same conversion on Mac OS X El Capitan or macOS Sierra.
