What is .m2ts?

The .m2ts is a filename extension used for the BDAV MPEG-2 Transport Stream container file format. The MPEG-2 TS container is commonly used for high definition (HD) video on AVCHD and Blu-ray disc. Some HD camcorders (like my Canon HF 100) record movie as *.mts and the others as *.m2ts files. When you download AVCHD footage from newly bought camcorder, the camera software may convert the internal MTS shootings to M2TS files. When you copy a commercial blu-ray disc to hard drive (1:1 full back up) with some blu-ray ripping software (like Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper), the M2TS files are placed in the subdirectory "STREAM" of "BDMV" directory, which is at the root level.
